OpenX for portal site

Monday, July 27th, 2009

Question:

I was looking into OpenX and have decided to use it as the ad-server for my own portal site, however as you would know it lacks the billing and client set up features that are automatic, rather its interface is more of the administrator sets up all information which does not suit my needs.

I came across your openX plugins and wanted to enquire about exactally what would be required in terms of the plugins you provide to achieve the setup I am trying to achieve, if possible at all.

Instead of having the model of sales as a client can enter their information and sign up and pick a package and enter their banner, it would be nice to see more of a google model, that is that the client can sign up on one window, and enter all of their information, then from their be able to deposit however much they want to into their account, so that they have a budget from which to work from. From that budget they can pick whatever packages they want (might be pay per view, pay per click etc) and it just takes the amount from the budget as they go, once the budget is gone, the campaigns (which they set up) are de-activated, until they top up their account, and then they can choose to activate them, or delete them, which ever they like.

It would be nice to also allow for some more advanced packages, so for example i could offer a country specific package, that limits delivery (based on maxmind) to a specific country, rather than just displaying banners to everyone. I know this is a function in the admin side of openx, but it would be great to be able to include that in a package, or have a setting so the user can just pick limitations (if setting set to yes by admin) That way advertising can become much more useful as advertisers may only want to advertise their product to 1000 people in USA, not 1000 people across the world.

In addition being able to pull demographic information from my site, eg advertise to logged in males, females, specific browser / OS type would be very useful. But basically I want to system to be automatic in that the client signs up, enters their information, uploads banners, sets up their own campaigns, with the limitation settings (delivery limitations) and can get their advertising needs going right away, there would be numerous zones across the site, a software program I am working on, and possibly in the future iphone apps, however there is only one site, so I would not have lots of publishers that I need to worry about, there is only one publisher (myself) and from there I want to accept advertisers to run campaigns and self manage everything including their budget.

Email reports would be a nice feature for the clients, so they can see how their campaigns are going, and get statistics, but really self management is most important (payment gateway would be paypal)

Could you advise what plugins / modules I would need from your site, the cost and the description of these plugins please and how they would help to bring together the central idea I am trying to achieve.

à We can have the advertiser sign up module. At the time of sign up advertiser will be able to deposit the money in his account.

We will integrate the PayPal for the payment processing.

Advertiser can refill his account in future. Advertiser will be able to create campaign/ banners and he will have to choose some package for his campaign.

Packages will be added by admin. The packages will contain cost of clicks/impressions. Country limitations feature also can be added in packages.

In such packages advertiser will be able to set the countries for which he wants to target his ad.

As the campaign will run the amount will be deducted from the advertiser account. Once the advertiser account balance comes to zero, all the campaigns will be deactivated.

Advertiser will be able to activate the campaigns after refilling his account.  And he will be able to delete his campaign also.

à We can have the Email report for the advertisers, which will send the statistics report to the advertiser by email for a particular period of time.

Bulk Import Utility for ads in OpenX

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

Question:

Is there a way to set up a bulk import utility for ads? Say, if I need to input like 500-1000 tags a day, so that it doesn’t take me a million hours?

Answer:

Yes, we can create n number of tags (invocation code) on click of button.

Here What do you mean by tags? I am assuming you are talking about invocation tag (ad code for zone).

We can give one link in each zone page says “Duplicate zone to n times” and it will popup window and it will give one text box and submit button. In text box, you can enter number of duplication of zone (so tags) and clicking on submit, it will make n number of zone with same zone property (including width, height, linked banners, etc) and then you will have n number of tags.

Banner Capping Not Working for my OpenX 2.4.7 instance

Friday, July 10th, 2009

Question:

I have upgrade to the 2.4.7 version and I notice that banner capping is not working
I would like to know if you can help to get the capping working. Capping was working in my 2.0 version of openads. I could give you the user:passwd for the admin to take a peek and if you can help mi fix and explain why this is not working and also tell me how long it will take for this.

In-Text advertising using OpenX

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

In-text advertising is all about advertising which is placed inside the text and they come with a double underline to differentiate them from normal links. Once the user rolls the mouse over the link the advertising will pop. Should the user click on it the site owner will make some money.

This method of advertising using this advertisement in news and journalism websites is strongly criticized by journalism companies across the globe.

Using OpenX, it is possible using HTML banner and some techniques using javascript.

Getting it working with iframe invocation all the time has been so challenging.

OpenXservices.com is involved in providing a custom solution and research in this area.
